Before Spring Break I had my midterm drawing critique. It was probably the best critique (of any kind) I have had to date. It went AMAZINGLY! It was so encouraging, and just wonderful all around. Because I'm so excited, I just have to share it with you. I hope it doesn't make me seem conceited or self-important.....that's not my intent.
First off, here are the drawings that I had at critique:
At critique, each person fills out a notecard with two things that the artist can work on or do differently and then two things that they like.
Here is the feedback that I got:
1.
-Love the colors - especially the winterscapes. They aren't too rich, but not dull
-Compositions work well, you seem much more comfortable in these. DO MORE! You're clearly in the zone.
-Areas of the fireplace scene seems a little congested, but not terrible
-Some anatomy seems off - the father's right arm in front of fireplace seems long.
2.
-Nice blues and greys in the ice that contrast nicely with the whiteness of the sky
-Character developement and color combinations are well organized
-Maybe not so much outline but it's not overbearing
-I have a hard time finding anything bad about these
3.
-The colors and characters are beautifully laid out and illustrated. Colors very even and well thought-out.
-Looks professional as well, great job! Palette gorgeous
-I don't know much about illustration, so I can't say I can see anything that need improvement
4.
-Beautifully illustrated
-Would work really well as illustrations in a book
-Don't make the stones on the last one darker. It will make the whole picture darker (I asked their opinion on that)
5.
-Beautiful color
-I like the clean white sky
-3rd picture, the grown man character's right arm seems a bit off
6.
-The use of color to draw the viewers eyes through the work is very nice
-I am still interested to see the images with a skyline
7.
-Use of color is very profound. I like the feeking it gives
-I love the simple backgrounds. Allows to focus on characters
8.
-I love your use of color; very clean lines; narrative flows well
-no negatives, really. Maybe adjust tones in log greys in 3rd composition
9.
-like very clean illustrations, very polished
-pink of little girl's dress doesn't seem to fit the rest of drawing; seems to neon.
-nice movement in second panel
10.
-You've done a great job with these and they look very professional and clean
-I think 3 more illustrations would really drive it home
-I really don't have any constructive criticism. Keep up the good work! :)
11.
-I love the style
-Very nice colors, I love the stark-white sky
-I'd like to see more value changes
12.
-marker lines are so clean!
-beautiful color pallette
-can I live in it?!
I think that I have learned and grown more from the feedback from my peers than that of my professors. They are so eager to encourage when something is done well, but also aren't afraid to tell me things to work on to help me get better. And because they themselves are great artists, I know that their advice is well thought out and worth considering. That is something I will really miss when school is over.
I am so glad to finally see your latest drawings. I think they are great. I can see why you want to be an illustrator. Thanks so much for sharing the them, as well as the comments. How nice to receive the constructive criticism, as well as the positive feedback. May all your remaining work be to your liking and bring out your best.
