This is partly because a.) I've been spending the last couple nights filing my taxes. And in the words of my sister, "I hate taxes. They ruin life". I concur.
b.) I've been spending far to much timing focusing on myself. I've been realizing that a lot of the things on my mind lately have been about myself--how am I doing at the gym? What foods do I want to eat? What do I want to do this weekend? How was my day at work? Ick! That needs to change, my friends. So, I'm going to start looking for ways to help others...whether that be volunteering, being more mindful of ways I can be pro-active around the apartment, etc. etc. If you have any ideas---LET ME KNOW!!! For starters, I've volunteered to be part of the "Charity Committee" at work. So I'll be helping plan the two charity/fundraising events that we will be having each year.
Something else that I've been realizing is that I've been spending FAR too much time on this ol' machine (aka my computer). I love all of the things I can do on computers, and the random (probably mostly useless) tidbits of info I can gather. But seriously, who needs to know that John Mayor and Katy Perry broke up or that you can watch episodes of The Cosby Show on Youtube? Nobody.
This is where my next thought comes in. I've made a list of 15 books to read/finish over the next year. If I'm lucky, I'll finish them before the year is up and can add more books. But for now, here's my list (I've finished the first one, and started the next two-- I'm on a roll!):
1.
2. Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis
3. The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd
4. Strengths Finder by Tom Rath
5. Bonhoeffer by Metaxas (Dietrich Bonhoeffer biography)
6. Common Sense by Thomas Paine
7. The Help by Katherine Stockett
8. A Severe Mercy by Sheldon Vanauken
9. How to Win Friends and Influence People Dale Carnegi
10. A Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren
Finish:
11. The Law by Friederich Bastiat
12. From Sea to Shining Sea by James Alexander Thom
13. We Two by Gillian Gill
14. Miracles by CS Lewis
15. Life Without Limits by Nick Vojicic
I tried to make it a balanced list of both fun and serious books. They are all books I have been wanting to read, but have put off for one reason or another. No more!! Now is the time for action!! Hopefully getting back to reading will be both edifying and intellectually stimulating.
Along those same lines, for the next week (and hopefully longer), I am promising here and now to not use my computer for anything except the following:
1. Checking email
2. Blogging
3. Checking job sites
Well, I think that's enough rambling for one night. Until next time, folks!
